This is a very wise quote because it's true that sometimes it's better think before talk and say nothing instead say something that can be inappropriate or prejudicial. It's something so simple but many people do the opposite. So it's a useful tip.

I really like this quote, because it's ingenious and that it says it's true. Always it's worse the effect that you weren't able to discover someone was lying than the fact he lied.
In the context of the book it's perfect and it gives to the character who said it a perspicacious and astute point.
